I do believe in ferries! #002

S.S. Badger

In 2010, we took a Fall trip to Wisconsin. Instead of driving through Chicago and its suburbs, we decided to travel across lake Michigan on the historic ferry  S.S. Badger.  It’s the only coal-fired steamship in the Great Lakes. They used to transport railroad cars in the hold, and load a few autos on top. The spindly ramp to the right is the former car ramp. Now automobiles and semi trucks use the hold.

It takes about 4 hours to make the 60-mile trip across the lake. Considering you’re not slogging through Chicago traffic, it works out pretty well.

They are unloading the traffic from Wisconsin.
