Instead of driving through Chicago and its suburbs, we decided to travel across\u00a0<a title=\"Lake Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Michigan\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">lake Michigan<\/a>\u00a0on the historic ferry \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SS_Badger\" target=\"_blank\">S.S. Badger<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s the only coal-fired steamship in the\u00a0<a title=\"Great Lakes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Lakes\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Great Lakes<\/a>. They used to transport railroad cars in the hold, and load a few autos on top. The spindly ramp to the right is the former car ramp. Now automobiles and semi trucks use the hold.<\/p>\n<p>It takes about 4 hours to make the 60-mile trip across the lake.
